As of November 7, 2026, Amazon's Shop Direct Merchant Workspace has been live for three days. Launched on November 4, the free portal lets eligible US online stores submit a product feed and appear in Amazon search results and inside Alexa for Shopping without becoming an Amazon seller. Merchants keep control of pricing, inventory, fulfilment and customer service. What they do not get is any reporting on impressions, clicks or sales, which turns the programme into a test with no dashboard attached to it.

Sign-up runs in three steps: create a Shop Direct account, verify the business website, and share a catalogue. Merchants can connect through Feedonomics, Salsify, CEDCommerce or VersaFeed, or directly through the Selling Partner API. Amazon's developer documentation names the feed type as GOOGLE_PRODUCT_DATA_FEED, which means a catalogue already maintained for Google Merchant Center is close to what Amazon wants, with variation families grouped by a shared item_group_id.

Two details matter more than the launch itself. Eligibility criteria are not published: no minimum catalogue size, no category list, no revenue threshold, no excluded verticals. And the programme is limited to the US store. For a brand running several markets, that combination turns the workspace into a test lane rather than a channel, and a test lane needs a decision date before it needs a budget.

Feed quality is now the conversion gate

GTIN, shipping and returns data

A conversion agency called Blend Commerce sent an automated shopping agent to 200 UK and US retailers across 20 sectors between September 8 and 15. Product data was readable at 171 stores, but only 18% of those pages included a GTIN, 22% carried shipping details and 20% showed a returns policy. The average agent-readiness score was 65 out of 100; baby and nursery retailers led at 88 and fashion came last at 49.

The bot wall in front of the feed

The same audit found 29 of the 200 retailers refused the agent on two attempts, including Home Depot, Best Buy, Macy's, Tesco, Argos and Next. Refusal rates ran at 20% for large retailers, 15% for mid-sized ones and 2.5% for emerging brands. Blend could read robots.txt for 24 of the refusing stores and found that all 24 allowed the ChatGPT, Perplexity and Claude crawlers, which points to bot protection software rather than a deliberate policy of exclusion.

Two buying paths, two sets of economics

A referral and an assisted order look similar in a press release and behave very differently in an analytics stack. One produces a visit the merchant can measure; the other produces a confirmation the shopper tracks inside Amazon. For a retailer that runs an affiliate programme, the question of whether an earlier referral is still credited after a Buy for Me order is worth a single test order rather than a debate.

A listing readiness checklist

Price monitoring gets harder rather than easier once a catalogue sits in a third-party index. Amazon says connected feeds pass price and availability updates to shoppers in near real time, so any price gap between the store and the feed becomes visible within hours. A retailer that runs a promotion on its own site without updating the feed will show one price to Amazon shoppers and another at checkout, and the difference lands as an abandoned order.

What to measure when Amazon reports nothing

The workspace shows which products are active and stops there. That leaves three workable proxies: branded search volume on the retailer's own site, the share of new customers who say they arrived through a marketplace, and the assisted-order share recorded in the order management system. None of them replaces Amazon's data, but together they answer the only question that matters after the first month, which is whether the feed is producing customers or just impressions.

The strategic read is that Amazon would rather be the front door to every store than one more store inside a walled garden. Retailers get free discovery in front of hundreds of millions of monthly searches and keep fulfilment, which is a genuinely good trade for a catalogue that is already clean. The ones who lose are those who switch the feed on without fixing product data, because an incomplete listing inside a bigger index is still an incomplete listing.

FAQ

  • Does Shop Direct cost anything for merchants?

Amazon says there are no fees to participate and merchants can opt out at any time. The cost sits in feed maintenance and in the reporting the programme does not provide.

  • Will the same feed used for Google Shopping work?

Amazon's documentation names GOOGLE_PRODUCT_DATA_FEED as the feed type, so an existing Google Merchant Center catalogue is close, but variation grouping still needs an item group id.

  • Can merchants see impressions or clicks?

No. The workspace shows which products are active and available to Amazon customers. Traffic and sales data are not included in the portal.

  • Is Shop Direct available outside the United States?

Not according to the developer documentation, which limits the programme to the US store. No timeline for other marketplaces has been published.
